Make Your Own Pizza Party

pizza-partyMost people are beginning to get a little stir crazy, so it’s the perfect time for a party. If you don’t have a lot of time to plan a party try one of these easy to pull together ideas. Try a make your own pizza party or birthday pizza party. It’s a great option for a Super bowl party and kids pizza party too.

Get flat bread or pre-made pizza shells to use as a base. Get both whole wheat and white so your guests can pick their favorite. Have marinara sauce, bbq sauce, pesto, and plain olive oil for your guests to choose from.

Put out toppings on an assortment of mix and match Noritake Colorwave. Create a platter of yellow, red, orange, and green peppers. Make sure to have an array of cheese. In addition to the typical mozzarella, have goat cheese and soy cheese for any dairy-free people. Shredded chicken or tofu both go great on a bbq pizza.

Shredded meats, pepperoni, veggie sausage, smoked tofu are all great proteins to use on your pizza. Have vegetarian selections easily available. Don’t forget to put out fruit like pears and apples. They cook up wonderfully in the oven on pizzas and go great with a little truffle oil on top.

Have bowls of mixed greens and arugula. You can use these for side salads or top a pizza when you pull it out of the oven. Have the traditional Parmesan, dried red pepper flakes, and oregeno to sprinkle on top. Mix it up a little with slivered almonds, cold goat cheese, and fresh herbs.

Have your oven heated up and cookie sheets ready to be loaded up with your friend’s creations. Have a stack of Noritake Colorwave next to the stove so you can plate up the pizzas as they come out of the oven. Have your guests each bring a different type of beer or fancy soda and have a beer tasting while you enjoy your meal.

Don’t forget about dessert! You can keep the pizza theme and do dessert pizzas. Have melted chocolate, fresh fruit, marshmallows and crushed cookies to choose from. If you decide to keep it more traditional, have a platter of brownies and cookies. Check out the sites on the web to get fancy cookie ideas.  I’m always amazed at the recipes you can find on the web.

Simple Weeknight Dinner Gathering

One of the ways I make sure to spend some time with my favorite friends is to schedule a causal weeknight dinner with them. We usually do Thursday nights and change off cooking every other week. It’s good to do this with close friends, so you don’t feel like you have to cook up a huge fancy meal. In fact, it’s the perfect time to share some of your best quick and easy dishes with your friends.

I still set a nice table, but with place mats instead of a dressier tablecloth. I always use cloth napkins because they are reusable and don’t add to the landfills. I like to use colorful dishes to brighten up the mid-week blahs. My current favorite is my Sengware dinnerware. I love using Sengware Pomello to show off dishes like blackened tofu or fish, or a beautiful squid ink pasta. It’s really striking on the vibrant yellow.

My friend’s favorite dish to cook is quesadillas. She makes hers healthier with low fat cheese and whole wheat tortillas. She opens a can of black beans and corn and mixes them with a mild salsa. There are bowls of avocado and caramelized onion for each person to add in if they want. They cook quickly in a hot skillet to melt the cheese. Christy’s motto is cheese on both sides to ‘glue’ the whole thing together.

You can also sneak in all kinds of leftover veggies from meals earlier in the week. I love greens, asparagus and goat cheese as non-Mexican style quesadilla. Pear and a mild white cheese with a sprtiz of truffle oil is another gourmet twist that takes no more time than the traditional. You can even serve these during a fancy cocktail party.

Make a quick salsa by pulling out your food processor. Add a can of tomatoes, green chilies, fresh garlic, lime juice and cilantro and puree it all together. You can even freeze the leftovers for another weeknight! If you have some leftover rice from earlier in the week, heat it up with a little water, some chopped cilantro, and enough salsa to turn it red. It’s a perfect side dish for any Mexican fare. Another easy side dish is simple steamed vegetables, sprinkle with a little chili powder and cumin to give it a little twist.
