The days of seeing each place setting on a table with exactly the same dishes may be history. It gives a modern twist to see plates layered in similar shades, or a juxtaposition by shapes. Either way it really creates an exciting table. I have to admit that I’m partial to Noritake dinnerware. The patterns vary from bold and modern to more traditional patterns. I’m sure you’ll find a few that suit your color scheme and style. They are very durable and can even be put in the microwave.
You may have only heard about Noritake in reference to their beautiful antique porcelain dishes with Nippon stamped on the back. But in the company’s 130 years of creating patterns for every generation, they have definitely made something for you. I also love that you can throw their modern sets in the dishwasher at the end of a dinner party, instead of washing them up by hand. It’s so easy that you may find yourself having people over more often.
My favorite pattern is the Noritake Colorwave, it was actually made to mix and match. Really the word pattern is even too narrow to describe the amazing selection of this set. Five people could buy their sets from the Colorwave series and not have the same table settings at all. It offers a range of choices for everyone to compliment their style.
There are 3 sizes of solid color square plates with stylish rounded edges, that are perfect to layer with the round plates. The round ones are in dinner and salad plate sizes, as well as a choice of thin color around the edge or a bold wide outline of color. You could use either the square or round as your dinner plate, then layer with the opposite one to add a geometric effect. You could also layer the different-edged round plates to draw your guests eyes straight to the table. Occasionally I’ll really mix things up and set my Colorwave on top of Noritake Kona wood chargers to get a cool retro look. As we all know, we are not the first generation to find simplicity modern.
Take advantage of being able to buy one place setting at a time, and get a few different colors. Blue is my favorite color, and I love to layer it with the graphite ones. Make sure to look at the variety of accent plates. There are geometric patterns as well as delicate and beautiful flower ones. Either add a splash of excitement to your table. While you are at it, make sure to take advantage of the beautiful circle patterned radius plate in the blue Colorwave series, to help you tie all of the colors on your table together with just a small plate. It’s my personal favorite.
There are plenty of serving plates and accessories like rice bowls, chip and dip server, and a round baking dish. And just one more thing I love is the fact you have a choice between coffee/tea cups or mugs. I find that so many patterns limit you in choice of mugs versus cups. Being partial to cups, this makes my day. Plus you can mix and match the colors of your accessories too.
Try to be bold in your choices. Try mixing and matching with your current dishes too. Layer them on a solid color tablecloth that compliments the colors in the dishes. This makes the dishes really stand out. You can add a few plates or bowls at a time to create your own timeless mix and match. This way you can create a new set on a time line that works with your budget. I’m sure you’ll start getting more compliments on your beautiful table as you start layering your table.
